In 1986 I was appointed curatorial assistant, office of the director, James Mollison at the Australian National Gallery (later the NGA), a position I held until 1989. Earlier curatorial experience was gained with the ‘The Shōgun Age Exhibition’ (1983-1985) and at The Tokugawa Art Museum (1978-1981). My first curatorial experiences were shared with Ian Maidment and Barry Pearce at the AGSA (1970-1971) and at the AGNSW (1972-1978) with colleagues Dennis Colsey, Gil Docking and Bernice Murphy through work with travelling exhibitions.
